Evaluating Autism Spectrum Disorders with the ASRS: New Data and New Ideas
This presentation begins with a brief overview of historical and current definitions of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and presentation of a large epidemiological study of the disorder. This study, based on the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale (Goldstein & Naglieri, 2009) standardization and validity samples, provides important insights into the nature of ASD. These data as well as data from other research sources demonstrate a changing pattern of core symptoms in autism. The presentation will include examination of the structure of the ASRS (both full and short forms), reliability and validity, studies, interpretation, treatment planning, and online administration methods. Current information will be provided concerning the most widely used and well developed instruments to help diagnose autism.
SLD, RTI, Cognitive Processing and Intervention: A Rational Solution
This workshop will explain how children with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) can be identified in a manner that meets requirement of IDEA 2004 (e.g., nonbiased assessment using reliable and valid measures). First, an examination of the scientific merit of the Response to Intervention (TRI) approach will be provided. Second, an examination of the scientific merit of and the use of the Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, Successive (PASS neuropsychological ) theory of ability will be provided. The diagnostic use of the IDEA definition of SLD will be illustrated using the PASS theory as measured by the Cognitive Assessment System and validity examined. Emphasis will be placed on empirically based interventions and case studies provided.
